Trump: Canada Wants Trade Deal, Cites Unfair Treatment
Asked in the Oval Office whether a deal with Canada was still possible, Trump said: "Well, they want to have a deal with us. They call us all the time."
He then laid out his grievance. "The problem is that they've treated the United States very unfairly. They have been one of the worst countries in the entire world," he said.
Trump contrasted Canada with other trading partners. "You know, we get along with China, we get along with the people, and we make good deals. But Canada has been really very difficult to deal with," he added.
The president also claimed Canada has charged American farmers 400% "and more."
"They take advantage of us. They feel entitled," he said.
The remarks come amid an escalating trade fight. Trump imposed a 50% tariff on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods after negotiations collapsed in August, and Canada answered with matching tariffs on Sept. 8.
Washington has since announced an outright ban on certain Canadian imports, including motorcycles and whiskey, set to take effect Sept. 29.
